Macquarie Valley floodplain harvesting

The Department of Planning, Industry & Environment (DPIE) is seeking feedback on proposed rules in water sharing plans for floodplain harvesting licences.

What’s this about?

Floodplain harvesting is an important source of water for industry, particularly in the northern basin areas of NSW.

Bringing floodplain harvesting into the licensing system will ensure the volume of water taken stays within legal limits specified in water sharing plans. This will help improve environmental, cultural and downstream connectivity outcomes.

The key rules that DPIE are seeking feedback on include:

  • account management rules
  • available water determination
  • permanent trade rules
  • access arrangement, including rules to protect environmental flows
  • amendment provisions.
