Geographical Names Board
What’s this about?
The Geographical Names Board (GNB) is seeking community feedback on a proposal by Lake Macquarie Council to rename Kennedy Creek in the locality of Gateshead as Maraikaan Creek.
Kennedy Creek is a 750-metre watercourse that begins near St Paul's Primary School, flows south through St Mary's College and Church, and joins Dicks Creek, Gateshead in the Lake Macquarie Local Government Area.
In 2024 Lake Macquarie City Council received a request from a member of the public requesting consideration in renaming Kennedy Creek due to allegations made against Monsignor Kennedy.
'Renaming places that carry offensive or hurtful associations is a step toward healing and inclusivity.'
Inspiration for the new names comes from the local area's history and native environment.
The name Maraikaan (mah-RYE-kahn) is derived from two linguistic elements of the local Awabakal language:
'Marai' - interpreted as 'soul' or 'spirit'. 'Ka-ai' interpreted as 'a call to come closer' or 'call of the soul'.
After consultation the name 'Maraikaan' was supported by the Miromaa Aboriginal Language and Technology Centre (Miromaa ALTC), St Mary's College and the broader community.
'Place names are more than labels - they carry meaning, history, and identity. It's vital they reflect the values and sensitivities of the communities they represent.'
The GNB wants to hear what you think about the proposal.
Select the online consultation to view and comment on the proposed renaming of Kennedy Creek as Maraikaan Creek.
You'll be able to:
- support or object to the proposal
- provide relevant information about the place name.
All submissions will be considered before a name is officially assigned.
