The Geographical Names Board (GNB) is seeking community feedback on a proposal by Glen Innes Severn Council to name a landmark in the locality of Glen Innes as The Australian Standing Stones.
The proposed landmark is located in the Centennial Parklands, accessed via Watsons Drive. It serves as a monument to honour Celtic people in Australia and the part that Celtic heritage has played in Australia's development, specifically in the Glen Innes region. The Australian Celtic Festival is hosted at this location annually.
The GNB is the authority for place naming in NSW. Place names are more than labels, they reflect the relationships between people and places, creating a rich narrative of communication, identity and belonging. Place names are expected to be enduring, so it's important they reflect the diversity in our community and carry significance.
Place naming is a community driven process that allows the GNB to make informed decisions about place naming in NSW from the people the place is linked to. Providing your feedback fosters an inclusive process that reflects the values and sensitivities of the community and strengthens the sense of connection to the area.
