What’s this about?

The Geographical Names Board (GNB) is seeking community feedback on a proposal by Parkes Shire Council to name a reserve in Parkes as Wululu Wetlands.

The reserve, which incorporates a constructed wetland, is located on Akuna Road, Parkes, within the Parkes Local Government Area. 

The term Wululu (pronounced woo-loo-loo) is the Wiradjuri word for the pink-eared duck - a species closely associated with wetland environments and native biodiversity. The name reflects the environmental purpose of the wetlands and their role in supporting native wildlife, while recognising and helping preserve the Wiradjuri language through place naming. The proposal is supported by the Parkes Wiradjuri Language Group and the Parkes Aboriginal Community Working Party.

Once established, the wetlands will provide important habitat for a diverse range of native fauna, including birds, reptiles, mammals and invertebrates. The site is expected to become a valuable refuge for wildlife, particularly during periods of low rainfall and drought.

GNB is seeking feedback to gauge community sentiment for the proposed name and suggestions for alternative names are not being sought at this time.
