What’s this about?

The Protection of the Environment Operations (Underground Petroleum Storage Systems) Regulation 2019 commenced on 1 September 2019.

This regulation is not consistent with recent regulatory changes and technological advances in Underground Petroleum Storage Systems (UPSS).

The new 2020 guidelines will better reflect and support the regulation.

The new guidelines will:

  • provide details on the environmental requirements for operating UPSS in NSW
  • specify what level of performance is expected of operators of a UPSS in NSW
  • assist with achieving compliance with the requirements of the regulation
  • summarise best practice equipment and procedures across industry.

The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) is seeking feedback from the community and industry to help finalise the new guidelines.
