What’s this about?
The NSW Government is updating the Alpine Geotechnical Policy to improve safety and support clearer development decisions across the Alpine Region.
The Alpine Region is a year‑round destination that supports regional communities and contributes to the state’s economy and wellbeing.
The region's distinct geographic and environmental conditions also present geotechnical risks and challenges for buildings and infrastructure, including in:
- design
- construction
- management.
The first step in updating the Alpine Geotechnical Policy is to review it with a consultation paper on exhibition for community feedback.
The consultation paper proposes a range of changes, including:
- advanced landslide susceptibility mapping of the Alpine Region, providing high-resolution digitised maps
- technical updates to strengthen geotechnical assessment and reporting requirements
- policy framework changes to minimise and simplify requirements for minor low-impact works, and for development in lower-risk areas
- practice changes to improve geotechnical documentation and related requirements.
