What’s this about?

The Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) is reviewing prices for water and wastewater services provided by Essential Water in Broken Hill and the surrounding areas of Menindee, Sunset Strip, and Silverton.

Prices for water transportation services provided by Water NSW’s Murray River to Broken Hill pipeline will also be reviewed. The pipeline supplies water to people in the Broken Hill region and is a key factor in deciding on prices for Essential Water customers.

Essential Water proposes to increase water and wastewater prices by around 2% a year over the next five years, on top of inflation. It is also proposed that the NSW Government expand its existing subsidy to keep prices affordable.

The proposed price increases are driven by higher costs to address ageing infrastructure in Broken Hill. The area's declining population increases pressure on prices as fewer customers share these costs.
