EMPOWER SMS health and wellness program
EMPOWER SMS is a health and wellness program that helps our breast cancer survivors after surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy, by offering support between appointments.
Empower SMS is a health and wellness program that helps people with breast cancer who have completed active treatment* (surgery and/or chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy) through Westmead Breast Cancer Institute by supporting them between their appointments.
*You can still be taking Endocrine therapy (e.g. Tamoxifen, Aromatase Inhibitors) or targeted therapy (e.g. Herceptin).
EMPOWER SMS is sent via four text messages per week for six months. Topics include managing side effects and endocrine therapy medication, getting active, healthy eating, mental health and suggestions about free services that may be helpful to you. EMPOWER SMS has been tested in a clinical trial at the Westmead Breast Cancer Institute and a national research study, including over 1,000 participants combined. Results showed that EMPOWER SMS helped people to be consistent with taking their endocrine therapy medication compared to usual care (no text messages). Participant feedback showed:
- 91% of participants found it useful
- 87% felt supported between medical appointments
- 70% were motivated to get active
- 69% were motivated to eat healthier

Note: EMPOWER SMS was designed with and for people with early-stage breast cancer. The program may not be suitable for patients with metastatic breast cancer. EMPOWER SMS is also not intended to be for the purpose of the diagnosis, prevention, monitoring, treatment, or alleviation of any disease and should never be used for medical emergencies.
Platform
We have engaged an Australian company, Known Pty Ltd (ABN 40 116 431 700) operating under the business name ‘Kudosity CO’ (“Kudosity”), to help us to provide EMPOWER-SMS. We will send and receive messages via Kudosity's web-based platform.
