Adolescent and Young Adult Hospice (AYAH)

The AYAH provides 15 to 24-year-old patients with life-limiting illness a contemporary facility that offers respite care, symptom management or end of life care. The facility is the first of its kind in Australia and also provides specialised support for families, including bereavement support and counselling. 

The Australian and NSW Governments funded the $19.5 million AYAH, along with major donations from the community.

Project information

The AYAH was built on the site of the former Many Hospital, which closed in October 2018 when acute services transferred to the Northern Beaches Hospital. The facility has been decommissioned and future uses for the remainder of the Manly Hospital campus have been developed by Property and Development NSW in consultation with the community and key stakeholders.

The project will: 

• deliver specialised care tailored to young people and their unique needs
• reduce the need for extensive travel for rural patients
• focus on privacy, respite and recreation
• be a catalyst for further end-of life care services for young people across NSW and Australia
• provide specialised support for families, including bereavement support and counselling
• provide a natural and peaceful setting for young people and their families.

Scope

The project included:

• 8 bedrooms for patients, each with an ensuite and outdoor balcony
• 2 carers lounges
• 2 family accommodation units with 2 bedrooms each
• on-site dedicated kitchen and dining room
• breakout spaces including lounge room, games room, media room, multi-sensory room, quiet room and sitting rooms
• laundry for families staying overnight
• outdoor balcony off the lounge room with views over the harbour
• garden and landscaping areas, including spaces for outdoor activities
• telehealth consult spaces.
