Project overview
575 Canterbury Rd, Campsie NSW 2194
The Canterbury Hospital Redevelopment will be the biggest upgrade of the hospital in over 26 years and will ensure the facility is able to respond to the health needs of the growing community. The redevelopment will provide patients and staff with access to the latest facilities and enable the dedicated health staff to continue delivering high-quality care.
Scope
In response to the Clinical Services Plan, the redevelopment will deliver new and increased health services and facilities, including:
- a new expanded and enhanced Intensive Care Unit
- new purpose built adult in-patient accommodation
- expanded and enhanced Emergency Department
- additional surgical theatres
- expanded and enhanced antenatal facilities
- additional ambulatory and outpatient care capacity
- new and enhanced facilities to support clinical education, workforce training, and research
- new Diagnostic Services Unit to support diagnosis and medical condition management
- enhancements to hospital support services, including pathology and pharmacy
- improved accessibility to the campus, including internal access, outdoor spaces, landscaping and wayfinding.
The schematic design for the Canterbury Hospital Redevelopment, the second step in the three-stage design process, is nearing completion. This phase developed the layout of each department in greater detail, building on the initial concepts.
In conjunction, the project has commenced the final stage of design, known as detailed design, which finalises the detail of each room and confirms the project scope.
To keep works progressing on the redevelopment, the project will undergo a staged planning approval process and be assessed under a Review of Environmental Factors (REF); one for Early Works and one for Main Works.
The Early Works REF planning application will include:
- Expansion and refurbishment of existing Antenatal facilities
- Internal fleet carpark modifications
- Relocation and upgrades of in-ground services
- Building a new exterior plant room
- Minor tree removal
- Establishment of work zone and amenities
The Early Works REF was lodged on 20 November 2025, and will be on public exhibition for 28 days, allowing staff and the community to review and provide feedback.
Submissions close at 11.59pm on 18 December 2025.
The planning application for the project’s main works is expected to be submitted in early 2026.
The project is taking a collaborative approach with clinicians, staff, patients, consumers and the local community to ensure the redevelopment meets the healthcare needs of the growing population.
Staff and community members were recently invited to provide input on the early designs and the project team is working through the valuable feedback received. This input will help shape a facility that supports high-quality care and reflects the needs and expectations of the diverse community it serves.
The Early Works planning application is now on public exhibition for 28 days.
As part of the public exhibition, you can view the project’s Review of Environmental Factors (REF) report, which has been prepared to assess the potential benefits and environmental impacts of the project.
Residents, staff and key stakeholders across Canterbury and surrounding suburbs will continue to be consulted throughout the redevelopment to ensure the hospital meets the needs of the diverse communities in the area. Consultation will occur through community and hospital pop-up sessions, presentations, in-language information, consumer groups, project user groups, surveys and more.
