The Maitland Mental Health Rehabilitation project will deliver a modern, purpose-built facility to provide specialised mental health support for adults at the Maitland Hospital campus in Metford.
Offering a transitional model of mental health care, the new facility will include general and forensic mental health services, catering for both male and female consumers.
The investment will improve the future capacity of our mental health system and ensure the most vulnerable members of our community can be treated in a therapeutic environment that best supports their journey to recovery.
The Maitland Mental Health Rehabilitation project is part of the NSW Government’s $700 million Statewide Mental Health Infrastructure Program (SWMHIP), an initiative to support mental health care reform across NSW.

Project information
Benefits
The project will:
- deliver a modern mental health facility that provides enhanced, consumer-focused services, supported by contemporary models of care.
- provide an opportunity to integrate modern technology, innovation and holistic care, ensuring better health outcomes for mental health consumers.
- enable relocation of current mental health services from outdated facilities to a new, purpose-built facility that is integrated with other health services at the Maitland Hospital campus.
- offer mental health staff more opportunities for training and development that sit alongside clinical care, facilitating improved outcomes for both staff and consumers.
Scope
The project includes:
- 24 low-secure beds (forensic)
- 20 medium secure beds (forensic)
- 20 high support beds.
The NSW Government announced the Statewide Mental Health Infrastructure Program in 2018, which included plans to relocate forensic mental health and general rehabilitation services units from Morisset Hospital.
In October 2023, the Maitland Mental Health Rehabilitation project was announced. Key project consultants were engaged and a master plan was developed to determine the best location for the facility on the hospital campus.
The project team has worked closely with consumers, carers, staff, and the broader community to help shape the planning and design of the new facility.
Planning documents were publicly exhibited in March-April 2025 to invite community feedback before finalising the design and calling for construction tenders.
Construction timeframes will be shared once a builder is appointed and the construction program is confirmed.
Following the development of the master plan, the design process began with input from consumers, carers, staff, and the community to ensure the new facility will be a welcoming environment and meet the needs of those who will live, work, and visit there.
Concept designs, released in August 2024, are high-level designs which show how services, buildings, and spaces connect. Concept designs were released in August 2024 - Click here to see the designs.
Schematic designs, released in October 2024, built on community feedback and show more detailed layouts of each unit within the new facility. Click here to view artist impressions of the schematic designs.
