Project overview
Derby St, Emu Plains NSW 2750
The project complements the redevelopment work that had taken place on the Nepean Campus. The project delivered an additional 650 spaces in a multi-storey car park to meet the expanded needs of the hospital.
Project information
Work on the project commenced in October 2009 and was completed in February 2014. Construction on the car park commenced in August 2012 and was completed in August 2013.
The project comprised of new works and upgrades, on and off the Nepean Hospital site. The $20.4 million Nepean car park was funded by the NSW Government.
The budget for the hospital expansion was $139 million. This included $42.6 million from the NSW Government and $96.4 million from the Australian Government's Health and Hospitals Fund.
Car park design
The car park was designed to create a visual identity that enhances the aesthetic of the corner site. The design is also efficient in terms of layout and operability, with the long axis aligned with Somerset Street. Entry to the car park is provided by one single entry to the northern end of the car park off Somerset Street.
One exit from the car park is provided at the southern end to Derby Street. The facade system has a series of vertical panels which break down the overall scale of the car park, and at the same time create a contemporary and aesthetically pleasing building which is respectful to both the hospital redevelopment and the surrounding neighbourhood.
The external skin of louvre panels assists in reducing radiant heat and glare into the building and are positioned to maintain an acceptable level of internal and external visibility both day and night.
They are also orientated such to create a dynamic experience by alternating between varying degrees of openness when one walks or drives around the building. The result is a timeless expressive building responding to its environment, its users and its functions.
