The NSW Government has committed $2 billion for a state-of-the art new Bankstown Hospital.
The new hospital is expected to include acute services such as an expanded emergency department, operating theatres and intensive care, services for women and children (including maternity), mental health, and parking.
The new hospital will be built in the Bankstown city centre, close to bus and train services, and the new Metro. It will be located on Chapel Road Bankstown.
Modern new working environments and employment opportunities will also help us to attract and retain valuable health staff.

Scope
The scope for the new Bankstown Hospital will be determined through the planning process, and is expected to include:
- emergency
- operating theatres
- intensive care
- services for women and children including maternity
- mental health
- other services
- parking.
Project timeline
The project is currently in the design stage.
The layout plan the layout of each department has been developed and we are moving on to detailed design.
Enabling works are under way – enabling works prepare the site for major construction.
We are continuing to consult with hospital staff, patients, carers, visitors and community members.
Main hospital construction is expected to start in 2027 when the design is completed and a builder is appointed.

The new site will include parking to meet the needs of the hospital.
The concept design released in November 2025 confirms a new multi-storey car park as well as on-ground parking. Parking and drop-off areas for emergency, main entry, discharge lounge, ambulance and other services have also been identified.
Parking areas include disabled parking spaces close to entries and lifts for easy access.
Parking options and number of spaces will be confirmed as planning progresses.
Yes, in fact there are more than 400 staff representatives directly involved in planning.
These staff representatives work with our planners, and with their hospital colleagues, to share ideas and information, and make decisions about each part of the hospital including the reception areas, wards, waiting areas and clinics.
Staff workshops (for staff not directly involved in project user groups) and updates are held regularly to keep staff informed about the project.
There will also be working groups for sustainability, arts in health and other key areas which have an impact on the whole-of-hospital design.

We will continue to consult with patients, carers and community members at every stage of the planning.
Consultation will includes workshops, information sessions and consultation at important design milestones, such as the first look at the designs and progressive design stages.
We will also work closely with the hospital's Consumer and Community Engagement Network, our multicultural community and our Aboriginal Elders, knowledge holders and community members.
The existing hospital will continue to operate until the new hospital is completed.
This ensures there is no disruption to healthcare services during construction.
When the new hospital is ready, services will transfer to the new building and the current hospital site will be redeveloped at a later stage for services such as day surgery and community health, and other health uses.
TAFE NSW Bankstown at 500 Chapel Road Bankstown is now closed.
Most training has relocated to the new TAFE NSW Bankstown City campus in the Western Sydney University Tower.
Some courses have moved to TAFE NSW Padstow and TAFE NSW Granville.

Yes. NSW hospitals prioritise spiritual and religious needs by providing multi-faith facilities for patients, visitors and staff.
These spaces are designed to be inclusive and accessible, offering a place for prayer, reflection, meditation, and quiet contemplation.
The new Bankstown Hospital is currently in the planning phase.
The multi-faith facility is expected to be on level 3. It is too early to say exactly what it will look like, but it is expected to include flexible rooms for prayer and reflection.
The hospital will continue to work closely with the pastoral care team, staff, community members, and local faith leaders to design the space.
Enabling works to prepare the site started in early 2026.
This will include include demolition, removal of services in the ground e.g. pipes and cables, and ground works like excavation.
Main works are expected to start in 2027 when a builder is appointed.
