This initiative supports individuals to transition from long-stay hospital care into safe, modern homes in their communities, with specialist on-site support services.
This housing investment is part of the Pathways to Community Living Initiative, a key project under the $700 million Statewide Mental Health Infrastructure Program (SWMHIP).
Project scope
Up to 60 beds will be delivered in new purpose-built accommodation across Sydney and the Hunter regions. There are currently four confirmed locations:
- Waratah and Maitland in the Hunter region
- Gladesville and Ryde in Sydney
Site investigations are underway in Western Sydney to identify additional locations.
These residences will be built close to local services, public transport, and community networks. Each residence will offer:
- Private and shared living areas
- Outdoor spaces designed to promote recovery and independence
- 24/7 support from specialist staff in a therapeutic environment
Benefits
The project will:
- Enable people with complex mental health conditions to live with dignity in safe, modern housing
- Reduce the reliance on hospital wards for long-term care
- Enhance recovery-focused, community-based mental health support
- Build capacity in the mental health workforce and housing infrastructure
