The Prince of Wales Mental Health Intensive Care Unit provides the highest acuity mental healthcare for acutely ill patients whose behaviour or condition escalates and needs sedation, seclusion and closer observation in a secure environment for a short length of stay.
Project information
Construction on the new facility commenced in late 2011 and was completed in December 2012. The 12-bed unit provides the ability for patients in a highly aggressive state to be treated and then transferred back to the acute mental health unit in their local area.
Scope
The project delivered:
- reception and discharge area for patients who arrive and leave via vehicle
- accommodation for legal practitioners including tribunal room for magistrates
- facilities designed to provide maximum observation of patients
- design included circulation space, natural light and outdoor areas
- flexibility in design for future changes
- acoustic separation between securable areas of the unit.
