As part of the Australian Government’s Sub-Acute Bed Program, a 20 bed sub-acute mental health facility was provided at Shoalhaven Hospital.
The facility caters for a range of acuity in the sub-acute spectrum and was designed to allow for gender separation where required.
Project information
Separate living and elevated outdoor space were provided as part of the development. This is the first unit of its kind in the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District, and closely links to the acute mental health services at Shellharbour and Wollongong.
The project was funded by COAG with a capital budget of $11.6 million. Construction on the project commenced in April 2013 and was completed in June 2014.
Scope
The project delivered:
- 20 bed mental health sub-acute unit for short stay admissions – all bedrooms are single bed rooms with ensuites
- multiple elevated internal court yard areas
- quiet activity areas for patient treatment and therapies
- in-patient facility designed to link to the main hospital via a level walkway. Given that the Shoalhaven Hospital site falls away, the ward area is elevated above an undercroft car park. The undercroft provides for car parking, patient transfer and whole of hospital support areas
- service lift to transport patients and supplies from the ground to the main floor at level one.
