The Westmead Redevelopment project has transformed the Westmead Health Precinct and has delivered an innovative, integrated facility that will deliver high-quality healthcare for decades to come.
Project information
At 14 storeys tall, the new Westmead Central Acute Services Building, which opened in 2020, is one of the tallest hospital buildings in Australia. Refurbishment works on the hospital is still underway.
The project is part of the NSW Government’s commitment to keeping people healthy and out of hospital, enabling timely access to services, providing world-class clinical services, and investing in critical infrastructure.
The NSW Government is investing more than $1 billion to redevelop the Westmead Health Precinct.
Benefits
The project will:
- Increase service integration between the adult’s and children’s hospitals.
- Enable greater integration of education, research and health services delivery through a partnership with the University of Sydney providing increased research space in the new Central Acute Services Building.
Scope
The project includes:
- The new 14-storey Central Acute Services Building provides increased service integration between the adult’s and children’s hospitals, which includes:
- 2 new Emergency Departments – one for adults and one for children
- 25 digital operating theatres
- expanded imaging, pharmacy and logistics
- more than 300 patient rooms, a high proportion of single rooms with dedicated carer zones
- more spaces with natural light
- Llndscaped entry plaza and forecourt
- education, training and research embedded into every floor
- 1.5 floors for the University of Sydney to enable greater integration of education, research and health services delivery.
- Stage 1 refurbishment works within the existing Westmead Hospital include:
- finance department
- gastroenterology – stage 1
- inpatient unit
- Westmead Education and Conference Centre, levels 1 and 2
- Kids Research Institute
- ear nose and throat/audiology
- drug health.
- Stage 2 refurbishment works within the existing Westmead Hospital include:
- Intensive Care Unit expansion
- aged care inpatient unit
- adolescent and young adults unit
- front of house retail link
- clinical support unit and executive office
- gastroenterology – stage 2
- transit lounge
- loading dock
- Innovation Centre – a research and education hub
- Cystic Fibrosis Specialist Services Unit (CFSSU), including expanded Respiratory Comprehensive Care Centre
- Significant upgrades to car parking, including a new multi-storey car park.
Still underway is:
- Stage 3 refurbishment works including sixteen operating theatres, ambulatory care unit and dermatology.
