The Wollongong Hospital Elective Surgery Unit provides improved access to surgical and associated services closer to where people live, enhanced coordination and provision of multi-disciplinary health services locally, and reduced elective surgical waiting lists.
Project information
The project also accommodates future growth in ambulatory care services through the expansion of the Emergency Department. The project has significantly increased the capacity of Wollongong Hospital in its role as the major teaching and referral hospital for the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District.
The $106.8 million project was funded by the NSW Government.
Scope
The project included:
- 7 new operating theatres
- 4 Stage 1 recovery beds
- 60 new surgical beds, including 10 new close observation beds
- 12 additional extended day-only beds
- 6 additional intensive care unit/high dependency unit beds in a new 24 bed unit
- 10 new Emergency Department treatment spaces
- one new and 3 refurbished resuscitation bays
- new ambulatory care facility providing 22 clinical spaces
- new central sterilising department
- new linen stores, loading dock area and food services works.
