Justice Health NSW release landmark resource, empowering staff to advance health literacy in NSW prisons
Justice Health NSW is proud to officially launch Health Literacy and Equity in NSW Prisons: 260 Co-designed Action Ideas – a landmark booklet from the Health Literacy in Prisons project, co-authored by Scott Gill and Dr Julia Bowman.
Based on twenty-one workshops and yarning circles across NSW correctional centres, the booklet captures 260 action ideas grounded in the lived experiences of 107 participants.
Developed as a source of research evidence that reflects the voices of people in prison and the staff who work with them, the resource supports Justice Health NSW teams to improve how patients in custody access, understand, and use health information and services.
Themes in the report align with organisational priorities, strengthening models of care, embedding consumer voice, translating data into meaningful service improvements, and supporting workforce capability.
The booklet offers practical, co-designed actions that can be adapted to local centres to:
- Guide team discussions, working groups, and improvement planning
- Inform service redesign, evaluation, and governance
- Support funding proposals and business cases
- Build partnerships across health and justice
