Broken Hill Palliative Care Services to Celebrate 30th Anniversary
Thirty years of palliative care services in Broken Hill and the Far West will be celebrated at an anniversary dinner/dance in July 2019.
'Our current palliative care services began 30 years ago in Broken Hill and then grew to include the now Far West Local Health District,' said Melissa Cumming, Director Cancers Services, Far West LHD.
The service started with one nurse in Broken Hill in July 1989.
'We are now fortunate to have two Specialist Palliative Care Services based in Broken Hill and Dareton with a large team of nurses, doctors, volunteer coordinators and volunteers, counsellors, and a multidisciplinary team that enables palliative care coverage across the whole local health district. An Aboriginal Health Worker and Bereavement Counsellor are soon to join the Palliative Care team,' said Melissa.
'Our work with our Primary Health Care providers, generalists and partner organisations has been pivotal to the success of palliative care throughout the district, and we couldn't provide the services we do without them. Additionally, the support we have received over the years from community donations to palliative care has enabled us to meet equipment and service needs of patients beyond our wildest dreams.
'We want to acknowledge those 30 years of palliative care in Broken Hill and the wonderful support palliative care has received from staff and the Broken Hill community,' said Melissa.
A 30 Year Anniversary Dinner/Dance has been planned and the night will also be a fundraiser with proceeds from a raffle going to Broken Hill Palliative Care.
The dinner will be held at the Broken Hill Civic Centre on Saturday, 27 July 2019 from 6.30pm to 11pm. Dress is cocktail or smart casual. Tickets are limited and are $70 each, which includes three courses and a band. Drinks will be at own cost.
