About our arts program
The Arts in Health Program will play an important role in the development of the Liverpool Health and Academic Precinct. It is our belief that arts and creativity move minds, bodies and spirits towards sustaining healthy lives.
The first health and arts strategy 2018-2023 (PDF 1.01MB) was developed by the South Western Sydney Local Health District, Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre and Liverpool City Council and forms the basis of the project-specific strategy.
Our latest health and arts strategy 2024 - 2029 (PDF 1.7MB) aligns with the project's next phase.
The health and arts strategy plays an integral role in creating a culturally safe and welcoming space for our patients, staff and visitors in the new building.
Led by arts consultant City People, the arts program explores resilience, journeys, nature, family, and connection.
Art projects
The new hospital's first series of artworks included:
- New entrance artworks: to highlight and honour our First Nations people.
- Wall art (envirographics): featured across 4 floors within patient and public spaces to represent our multicultural community.
- Car park installation piece: A large installation piece Flowers of Gandangara was commissioned for the Liverpool Health and Academic Precinct car park.
The Liverpool Health and Academic Precinct Arts in Health Strategy achieved an exciting milestone with the installation of the First Nations artworks in the new building’s foyer.
Led by First Nations creative team ZakPage and codesigned with the local Aboriginal community, the commissions included a major digital artwork display and a suspended sculpture.
The sculpture is a companion to the digital work, both called Burbangana, a Dharag word meaning ‘take hold of my hand and help me up’.
Both pieces are a celebration of Country, which fosters a culturally safe environment and a warm welcome (especially to First Nations families).
Wall art (envirographics) was designed in consultation with the local multicultural community and developed by four local artists in collaboration with artist team Barahanos Byrne.
The wall graphics, spanning across four floors of the new building, reflect the diverse culture of Liverpool and reflect the themes of belonging and culture.
Our wonderful project artists are:
- Federico Rekowski - Healing Essence
- Kevser Ugurlu - Journey in Harmony
- Kevin Vo - Reflections
- Yasameen Albo - Shanasheel

Liverpool Hospital’s new $50 million car park features one of the largest artwork installations developed by renowned Indigenous artist Bibi Barb.
Flowers of Gandangara was developed in collaboration with Aboriginal Elders, local community and project architects.
The artwork is inspired by flower petals from the Gandangara region and the rich Aboriginal history of the Liverpool region. It celebrates the local region’s environmental and cultural diversity using shape and colour on a mass scale.
Each of the 1790 petals were installed by specialised high-access experts using professional design software. The artwork’s distinctive identity has been embraced by local schools and hospital staff who were engaged throughout design development.
Watch our project video to learn how Bibi Barba designed and created this unique artwork.
