National Close the Gap Day
National Close the Gap Day (20 March) is a reminder of our shared commitment to achieving health equity for Aboriginal patients.
Establishing culturally safe and appropriate care for Aboriginal people in custody is vitally important to Justice Health NSW. We are committed to boosting our Aboriginal workforce, establishing culturally safe models of care, and creating strong partnerships with community.
This year, Justice Health NSW is adopting a whole of organisation approach and conducting health promotion events at correctional centres with the largest Aboriginal populations – Mid North Coast, Wellington, South Coast and the Metropolitan Remand and Reception Centre in Silverwater, Sydney.
Delivered throughout March and April 2025, these activities help to improve access for patients by addressing health concerns at the time, increasing patient engagement in health issues, and encouraging conversations.
We are also working closely with Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHOs) to deliver better outcomes to patients and improve their chances of success when reunited with their communities.
It is through these efforts that we can make a difference and help close the gap.
