Enrolled Nursing

A range of scholarships, cadetships and programs are available to Enrolled Nurses.

This Cadetship Program provides support and assistance to people studying Diploma of Nursing course to become an Enrolled Nurse.
Benefits include:
- a study allowance of $600 per fortnight while studying full time, for 40 weeks over your course
- 12 weeks paid employment in one of our health services
- support from a mentor, cadet coordinator and additional clinical training and support
- the possibility of ongoing employment when you successfully complete your studies.
This is a targeted position in accordance with GSE Rule 26 – affirmative action will be applied to employment of eligible Aboriginal persons. For more information, visit Government Sector Employment (General) Rules 2014.

We offer dedicated positions to assist new graduate Enrolled Nurses to transition to professional clinical practice. The transition from new graduate to competent nurse can take 12 months or more, our goal is to provide training and support throughout this crucial year.
The transitional year provides role models and a supportive environment in which newly graduated Enrolled Nurses:
- develop clinical competence with a consistent approach for improved health outcomes of those living and working in rural areas
- exhibit professional practice behaviours
- experience job satisfaction
- establish connections with our district and our communities.
EN Transition to Practice program includes:
- 2 weeks paid study leave to attend orientation
- 5 days paid study leave to attend scheduled education sessions throughout the year
- support from a mentor/practitioner, EN transition to practice coordinator and additional clinical support
- completion of portfolio of practice (competencies)
- individualised learning support plans
- opportunity to work in specialist clinical areas including aged care, maternity
- regular debriefing sessions.

We are committed to providing opportunities for ENs wishing to further their nursing careers whilst remaining close to their families and local community. This program aims to ensure ENs are supported to achieve their registration as a Registered Nurse while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
EN to RN Conversion scholarships include:
- Paid study leave for 2.5 days per subject, each semester for residential schools, examinations and clinical placements. Maximum study leave is 10 days per year. Permanent part-time employees receive leave on a pro-rata basis.
- $1000 accommodation and travel subsidy to attend clinical placement if over 100km from usual home address or workplace, paid upon successful completion of clinical placement.

- Your application must be approved prior to you starting study.
- Download and complete an EN to RN scholarship application form (PDF 293.67KB) and submit to your Director of Nursing (DON) or Health Service Manager (HSM) together with supporting documents including copies of your university offer, course outline, proposed enrolment or progression.

Travel & Accommodation Subsidy ($1000)
- Download and complete an Application for Accommodation and Travel subsidy form (PDF 312.24KB) together with evidence of the distance to your placement/residential school from your home/work, and submit to your DON/HSM.

- Once placement is completed, you will be asked to submit your academic transcript demonstrating successful completion of the placement.

Registered Nursing and Midwifery - Undergraduates

Available to Registered Nursing and Midwifery undergraduates who live within Western NSW Local Health District (WNSWLHD) in any year of study – apply at any time and stage of your study, applications are always open.
RUGS scholarships include:
- establishing a partnership between you and one WNSWLHD facility close to your home, for the duration of the scholarship
- employment as an Assistant in Nursing or Assistant in Midwifery for 12 weeks per year, either during university breaks, or as mutually agreed
- support of an experienced practitioner for the duration of the scholarship
- on completion of studies and registration with the NMBA, a GradStart position at your paired rural/remote hospital
- on completion of the GradStart year, permanent employment, full or part-time within a rural or remote facility within WNSWLHD, subject to satisfactory performance
- once in permanent employment at a rural/remote facility, you will receive $5000 at the end of each year served as a contribution to your HECS-Help Loan, for maximum of three years, to a total value of $15,000.
How to apply
Applications will include:
- evidence of commencement or continuation a Bachelor of Nursing or Bachelor of Midwifery course
- evidence of rights to work in Australia and that you are currently living in, or your home is in a rural location within WNSWLHD
- a commitment to practice as a Registered Nurse or Registered Midwife, in a rural or remote area of WNSWLHD, once studies have been completed.
