Public housing fire safety program
To maintain high safety standards, Homes NSW conducts a fire safety program across our properties. As a tenant, here's what you need to know.
Fire safety standards in your home
Homes NSW is committed to keeping your home safe. Our properties are well built and provide a high level of fire safety. Every home already has at least one hard-wired smoke alarm with battery backup.
To maintain high safety standards, we conduct a fire safety program across our properties. Even if your smoke alarm was recently serviced, your home still needs a full fire safety inspection.
Fire safety inspections
You’ll receive a letter at least 7 days before the inspection. The inspector will confirm the date and time with you.
If you can’t make the scheduled time, contact the inspector using the details in your letter. If needed, work can be done on a Saturday.
Fire safety maintenance work
If the inspector sees a need for maintenance work, a contractor will contact you to arrange an appointment.
Work may include installing smoke seals, fitting fire-rated doors, or applying fire-resistant paint. The inspector will inform you of the specific work needed.
Most work will be completed within a week. The contractor will provide more details on timing.
You won’t need to move out. Contractors will move and protect your furniture as needed.
Certified contractors
Homes NSW approved contractors will handle all inspections and maintenance work. They’ll carry photo ID, so please ask to see it before letting anyone into your home.
The contractor is responsible for any damage caused during work.
