LPG cylinder safety at home
Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) is an efficient fuel commonly used for heating, cooking and automotive applications. Learn more about the safe use, storage, transport and maintenance of LPG cylinders to help prevent fires, burns and explosions.
Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) is an efficient fuel for heating, cooking and automotive use. Cylinders (gas bottles) are safe when used correctly, but misuse, poor storage or damage can cause fire, burns or explosions. Safe use, storage, transport and maintenance is critical.
Using LPG safely
- Cylinders used for household purposes must not be filled with automotive LPG (Autogas).
- Use outdoors or in well ventilated areas.
- Keep away from flames, sparks and heat.
- Avoid using in strong winds (over 10 km/h).
- Valves should open and close smoothly. If there is resistance, contact your supplier.
- Turn off the cylinder valve before disconnecting from appliances.
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Storing LPG cylinders
- Store outdoors in a well ventilated area.
- Keep upright at all times.
- Keep away from petrol, aerosols and flammable items.
- Ensure valves are off when not in use.
- Point pressure relief valves away from buildings and combustibles.
Transporting LPG cylinders
- Max total capacity in a car: 9 kg.
- Transport upright, secured, and preferably in the boot.
- Do not leave in vehicles unnecessarily.
- Transport no more than two cylinders at a time.
Maintenance
- Re-test and stamp gas cylinders every 10 years.
- Never use a naked flame to detect a leak. To check for gas leakage, spray soapy water on connections or hose and watch for bubbles.
- If unsure, turn off the gas and arrange a licensed gas fitter to check the hose and connection.
- Do not attempt to refill dented or corroded cylinders. They must be returned to a test station for re-certification.
- Never tamper with the safety valve or other gas bottle fittings.
In an emergency
If you detect a strong smell of gas, call Triple Zero (000) and ask for the fire service.
