Alternative options for home modifications beyond reasonable adjustment
If your request for home modifications exceeds what’s considered a reasonable adjustment, we will offer alternative options to help you secure suitable support for your disability or medical needs.
Interim modifications to support your needs
Home modifications that exceed reasonable adjustments are outlined in Home modifications for tenants living with medical or disability needs.
When funding for modifications is from a source other than Homes NSW, visit the Alterations to a Home policy.
Steps to help you with modifications beyond reasonable adjustments:
Applying for modifications through National Disability Insurance Scheme
If you’re a public housing tenant who may qualify for a National Disability Insurance Scheme package, we can refer you to the National Disability Insurance Agency to explore funding for the necessary modifications.
Access aged care assessment tests
If you’re over 65 (or over 50 for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders), we may refer you to My Aged Care for an assessment by the Aged Care Assessment Team. We may also suggest you apply for Federal Government funding.
Connect with other support providers
If you’re eligible we can refer you to additional support agencies like iCare, Veterans affairs, or other organisations to seek funding for necessary home modifications.
Explore specialist disability accommodation
If you require specialised equipment or significant adjustments, we may refer you to a Specialist Disability Accommodation provider to help find a suitable home.
Relocate to a more suitable property
When modifications can’t be made to your current home, we’ll work with you to find a more suitable property. Financial assistance for relocation may be available if needed.
No suitable relocation property
If you don’t qualify for NDIS, Aged Care, or Specialist Disability Accommodation, and no suitable relocation property is available, we may provide necessary modifications in your current home. Modifications must:
- directly address your medical or disability needs
- help you to live independently and safely.
Appeal a decision
If you disagree with the decision we’ve made, talk to your client service officer. If you’re still not satisfied, you can ask to have the decision reviewed. For more information visit appeals and reviewing decisions.
