The 2022 floods placed extraordinary strain on local businesses across the Northern Rivers, disrupting essential services and compounding existing shortages in technical and professional expertise. To support economic recovery and long‑term resilience, the NSW Reconstruction Authority established the Northern Rivers Resilient Business Activation Program (RBAP), offering targeted assistance to small and medium businesses and helping revitalise town centres.
Ecoteam, an environmental engineering and wastewater management company, played a vital role during and after the disaster. The team provided critical expertise that helped communities access clean water, supported councils with environmental compliance, and assisted government agencies to manage recovery efforts. However, Ecoteam’s own office facilities were impacted by the floods, limiting their ability to operate safely during future events.

Through the Program, Ecoteam is undertaking a major upgrade of their Lismore office at 13 Ewing Street. The project brings together two historic buildings and incorporates a range of flood‑resilience measures, including raising one of the buildings above the 2022 flood height, using flood‑resistant materials, and installing a new central connection between both structures. Wherever possible, Ecoteam has repurposed existing hardwood framing, timber beams and internal linings from the original buildings — materials chosen for their durability and ability to withstand repeated wetting without deteriorating.
These upgrades will allow Ecoteam to continue operating during natural disasters and support the community when technical expertise is most needed. By ensuring their office remains functional, the project also strengthens local employment opportunities, including Ecoteam’s commitment to supporting local workers and contributing to a diverse, community‑focused workforce.
