Dams Safety Regulation 2019
What's this about?
Work is underway to establish new rules for how dams safety will be managed.
In 2013, the NSW Government initiated a review of the Dams Safety Act 1978 and its associated regulatory framework.
The review identified a need to improve safety regulation by providing clear, enforceable safety standards that dam owners must comply with. It also recognised the need for an independent regulator to enforce compliance.
The review resulted in the development of new legislation, the Dams Safety Act 2015, and the associated Dams Safety Regulation 2019.
A series of public consultations will take place with communities, industry stakeholders and dam owners. This will include discussions around what the reforms mean and the safety responsibilities of dam owners.
