New marine park proposal

Topic: Environment

NSW Marine Estate Management Authority is seeking feedback on a potential new marine park in the Newcastle, Sydney and Wollongong regions.

Barrenjoey headland

What's this about?

The proposed marine park will include 25 sites from Newcastle to Wollongong, to further enhance biodiversity outcomes.

It includes establishing a marine park that will aim to enhance the conservation of marine biodiversity and maximise environmental, social, cultural and economic benefits to the NSW community.

The marine park proposal is in addition to and will complement the initiatives under the Marine Estate Management Strategy 2018–2028. The strategy addresses priority threats to the NSW marine estate identified in the statewide threat and risk assessment (TARA).

A two-part discussion paper describes how the priority threats that impact the Hawkesbury Shelf marine bioregion are proposed to be managed.

A series of information sessions and stakeholder meetings about the marine park proposal are scheduled up until mid-September 2018.

Feedback on the proposed new marine park, the sites and the management are being sought to inform the final marine park proposal.
