Case studies: Simplifying government services
The BIU worked with the NSW Department of Primary Industries to make it easier for drought-affected farmers to access the assistance available under the NSW Government’s drought relief package.
This was done by simplifying the application process, making information easier to understand and ensuring pathways to assistance were clearly signposted.
Apprehended Domestic Violence Orders (ADVO)
The BIU worked with the NSW Department of Justice to redesign domestic violence court orders to make them easier to understand and comply with.
This was done by:
- simplifying and personalising the language and using concrete examples to explain what the orders mean in practice
- using social influence to highlight what is normal and appropriate behaviour
- making the consequences of non-compliance prominent and leveraging the ‘fresh start effect’ to promote positive behaviours.
