Local business, global reach: Phil Dodds, Orange
Phocas Software CEO Phil Dodds has set up offices in North America, the United Kingdom, Melbourne and Sydney, but he chose Orange in NSW’s central west to establish the multi-national company’s head office.
Phil said, “People in Orange have great values, they work hard, very rarely leave and are a lot happier than city folk. I have built a loyal team since I moved back 15 years ago.
“It’s also all about work-life balance – that’s how we built the business. There’s a misconception that people can’t progress in their careers due to working in regional NSW. A lot more people are now working remotely, including banking jobs and the opportunities are on par with cities.”
Some of the varied roles in the Phocas office include sales, marketing, finance, admin, people and culture, customer experience and product and platform.
Phil was born and bred in Orange and still has a lot of family who live in the same town. He built his career in Sydney, Canada and the United States.
The father of four now lives on a farm in Cumnock, a village with a population of 275 people located 50km west of Orange. Phil’s wife works on the farm with sheep and cattle and as a teacher’s aide at the local school.
“Realistically, the salaries here aren’t the same [as in the bigger cities] but the infrastructure is excellent, there’s great community facilities and Orange has everything you need. I play tennis and squash regularly, I’m involved in the Orange Theatre Company and my three boys all play junior cricket. My daughter is into arts and crafts and trains regularly with a running group.” Phil said.
“Most of the staff live within 5-10 minutes’ drive away from the Orange Phocas office, as local property is very affordable.”
Phocas Software is an award-winning company that employs 160 people in Australia, the United Kingdom and Europe. Some of its highest profile clients include McDonalds, Microsoft, Kraft Foods, Bayer, NSW Health and PricewaterhouseCoopers.
