Film and Gaming Ratings Policy

YJNSW has a duty of care to young people housed in a custodial environment in relation to the film and game content  they are able to access. The access is in relation to films and gaming provided by a YJNSW Centres as part of established routines and engagement in  programs.  

This policy is guided by the Classification (Publications, Films and Computer Games) Act 1995 and the National Classification Code (May 2005) as well as subsequent information from the Australian Government Classification Review Board.   The above legislation is concerned with the following principles relevant to young people:  

• “minors should be protected from material likely to harm or disturb them, 
• everyone should be protected from exposure to unsolicited material that they find offensive, 
• the need to take account of community concerns about depictions that condone or incite violence, particularly sexual violence and the portrayal of persons in a demeaning manner”. YJNSW is committed to ensuring that the young people in its care are not exposed to any film or gaming content that may be detrimental to their welfare or wellbeing as well as ensuring that community standards and expectations are met within the context of the Youth Justice Centre custodial environment.
