The NSW Government is leading condition assessments in 61 Discrete Aboriginal Communities (DACs) across NSW to help plan future upgrades and repairs. The condition assessments will help ensure communities receive the infrastructure support and investment they need.
What will be assessed?
The assessments will cover key areas, including:
- Road reserves – checking road conditions and safety
- Water and sewerage – looking at water supply and waste systems
- Asbestos and contaminants – identify possible risks
- Emergency management – reviewing how prepared communities are for emergencies
- Housing – assessing homes (optional)
When will the condition assessments take place in my community?
Assessments will start from September 2025. Aboriginal Affairs NSW will work with Local Aboriginal Land Councils (LALCs) and communities to ensure the process is culturally appropriate and that communities are fully informed and involved.
How will communities be involved?
Aboriginal Affairs NSW will consult with LALCs and community members before assessments begin. Communities will have opportunities to provide input and feedback on their infrastructure needs. They will be involved and consulted throughout the process.
Will this work include repairs?
No, this initiative is about assessing current conditions, not making repairs. The findings will help determine how much funding is needed to improve living conditions in the future.
What happens if asbestos or other hazards are found?
If asbestos or other contaminants are found, Aboriginal Affairs NSW will work with the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) and other agencies to manage the risks. Communities will be informed, and safety measures will be put in place. Information on asbestos will also be shared during the assessments.
Who is doing the assessments?
A service provider will be engaged through a procurement process, which is expected to be finalised by August 2025. LALCs will be informed once a provider is selected, and Aboriginal Affairs NSW will coordinate site visits.
