Caring for Country at Gandangara: First Peoples Rapid Response Team
The Gandangara community is using its knowledge as carers and protectors of Country to help to ensure a sustainable, self-determined and culturally rich future for south-west Sydney.
Recently launched, the First Peoples Rapid Response Team emphasises the interconnectedness of cultural and environmental health for Aboriginal people. This concept is a cornerstone of the Gandangara Local Aboriginal Land Council’s ‘Caring for Country’ initiatives.
The Land Council was funded through an Aboriginal Affairs NSW Community and Place grant to establish the Rapid Response Team and create culturally meaningful employment that empowers Aboriginal rangers.
Located on Aboriginal-owned lands at Heathcote Ridge in south-west Sydney, the Rapid Response Team focuses on restoring and protecting over 850 hectares of cultural heritage by blending traditional ecological knowledge with modern conservation methods.
Dr Melissa Williams, Chief Executive Officer of Gandangara Land Council said: “The Caring for Country initiatives have been years in the making, built on the vision and dedication of our Members and community.”

The team of rangers is committed to strengthening its skills in land management, site maintenance, and cultural burns. To deepen their expertise, the rangers will soon participate in a five-day Aboriginal Cultural Burning course, enhancing their understanding of traditional fire management practices to ensure sustainability and cultural continuity.
“Welcoming Kelly Barton and Trinity Paulson-Dixon to the First Peoples Rapid Response Team is a wonderful milestone in this journey. Their passion and commitment bring our aspirations to life, ensuring that our cultural heritage and connection to Country can thrive for generations to come,” Melissa said.
The First Peoples Rapid Response Team exemplifies the core values of Caring for Country, affirming that healthy lands and vibrant cultural heritage are essential for a thriving community.
Through structured training, partnerships, and a focus on protecting traditional knowledge, the First Peoples Rapid Response Team helps to conserve land and build a future rooted in cultural pride and resilience for the Gandangara community.
