Appointment of Governor David Hurley as Governor-General
Premier Gladys Berejiklian has congratulated His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Ret’d), Governor of NSW on being appointed the next Governor-General of Australia.
Ms Berejiklian has paid tribute to Governor Hurley for his committed service to the people of NSW over the past four years.
“Governor Hurley has dedicated his entire adult life to the service of his country,” Ms Berejiklian said.
“The people of NSW have been extremely fortunate to have him as our 38th Governor.
“Governor Hurley has completed scores of visits to all parts of regional NSW – from Albury to Lismore to Broken Hill and everywhere in between.
“He has played an integral role in helping NSW communities commemorate the Centenary of Anzac.
“Governor Hurley has also worked tirelessly to assist communities battling drought, bushfires and floods, providing his support in times of need.
“In all aspects of his duties, he has been supported by his wife Linda. Mrs Hurley is also held in high regard for her compassion and commitment to NSW.”
Governor Hurley was born in Wollongong in 1953 and graduated from the Royal Military College, Duntroon in December 1975 into the Royal Australian Infantry Corps.
In 2010 General Hurley became a Companion of the Order of Australia for eminent service to the Australian Defence Force. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his service in Somalia during Operation SOLACE.
Governor Hurley’s current term as Governor of NSW expires next year. A decision on the next Governor will be made in the near future.
