Booming Bungendore scores new sports hub

Bungendore is set to receive a brand new sports hub to service the sport and recreation needs of its booming population thanks to $2.45 million in funding from the NSW Government.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian joined Deputy Premier, Minister for Regional NSW and Member for Monaro John Barilaro, and Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres, at a new greenfield site for the community sports precinct in the heart of Bungendore today to make the announcement.

Ms Berejiklian said the money would help to deliver a high quality regional sports venue with four new natural grass fields with irrigation, flood lights for night games, two sealed netball courts, two natural grass courts and amenities and parking.

“Bungendore is a regional town to watch with a flood of people making the tree change from across the border in Canberra,” Mr Berejiklian said.

“It gives me great pleasure to announce this funding which will help to provide the quality, local infrastructure a growing community like Bungendore needs to remain a great place to live, work, or raise a family,” she said.

Mr Barilaro said the new sports hub is one of many sporting projects recently announced across the Monaro, with a further $250,000 announced for upgrades at the Braidwood Recreation Ground, $350,000 for a new change rooms and gym building at Campese Oval, and $1.2 million for the Queanbeyan golf course.

“I congratulate Bungendore on this mammoth funding win – the community deserves this major infrastructure and I know it will go to good use,” Mr Barilaro said.

“It has always taken around 30 minutes to travel to the nearest major town for a sports precinct, and now there will finally be a local hub suitable for everything from netball to soccer, and it will go a long way to make Bungendore a happier, healthier township,” he said.

Mr Ayres said the new sporting complex will boost community health and morale.

“We know by building the right facilities we help to drive sports participation which is great for health and wellbeing and building stronger regional communities,” Mr Ayres said.

Queanbeyan-Palerang Council Mayor Tim Overall welcomed the funding announcement.

“Our local sporting clubs in Bungendore are active and growing, and having a modern and well-equipped sports hub will allow those clubs to continue to provide great sport and recreation opportunities for the community,” Mayor Overall said.

“Currently, sports facilities in Bungendore are limited, and suffer from over use. It is great that we will have a real regional sports and recreation facility to enjoy,” he said.
