Major art exhibition opens exclusively at Sydney's MCA
The Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) in Sydney will host the Southern Hemisphere’s first major solo exhibition by internationally acclaimed artist Do Ho Suh, until 26 February 2023.
The NSW Government through its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW, has partnered with the MCA to exhibit works by the acclaimed South Korean artist as a Sydney exclusive for the Sydney International Art Series 2022-23.
Minister for Tourism and the Arts Ben Franklin said securing this exhibition exclusively for Sydney would be a major visitor drawcard that positioned the Harbour City as a global cultural destination.
“Do Ho Suh is one of the world’s most acclaimed artists, known for evocative and visually striking large-scale sculptures and architectural installations,” Mr Franklin said.
“This exhibition is going to be a highlight for many visitors from interstate and overseas over the summer. It reaffirms Sydney as Australia’s cultural capital and a global hub for the arts, where art and creativity are celebrated and nurtured.
“Around 20,000 art lovers are anticipated to visit Sydney to experience this incredible collection of Do Ho Suh’s work, generating more than $16 million in visitor expenditure.
“Bringing the best international art to Sydney and delivering world-class cultural experiences is a key pillar of our commitment to make NSW the major events capital of the Asia Pacific.”
Museum of Contemporary Arts Australia Director Suzanne Cotter said the Do Ho Suh exhibition includes 37 artworks across a wide range of media, including the artist’s well-known and much-loved architectural installations and large-scale sculptures.
“Do Ho Suh has been an indelible and eloquent presence for contemporary art for over three decades. His work speaks to who we are as individuals and as part of the different collective situations that constitute society.”
“The MCA is thrilled to present his powerful and engaging art at such a significant scale and to offer the opportunity to experience his work to our many publics.”
Do Ho Suh at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia is presented as part of the NSW Government’s Sydney International Art Series through Destination NSW – bringing the world’s most outstanding artists and their works exclusively to Sydney.
