Minister for the Central Coast congratulates new councillors

The councillors are the first voted in to represent the Central Coast since the Council was suspended by the previous Government in October 2020 and later dismissed following a public inquiry.

As well as electing Council, Central Coast residents were also asked to vote on a referendum to reduce the number of councillors from 15 to nine at the poll.

A significant ‘yes’ vote means that residents will vote for nine councillors across three wards, instead of the current 15 across five wards, at the next local government election in 2028.

Minister for the Central Coast David Harris said:

“I congratulate all the candidates who were successful in winning the right to represent their community and serve on Central Coast Council, and acknowledge everyone who contested.

“Democracy is back and the people of the Central Coast have spoken, delivering a balanced council, comprised of five Labor, four Liberal and six independent councillors.

“After a long period of turmoil and financial strain, the region deserves stable leadership and a council focussed on ratepayers.

“I urge all new councillors to take their time and understand their role and the policy and financial challenges of running Central Coast Council.

“Above all, the community needs them to build relationships and work cooperatively with fellow councillors, staff and ratepayers.”
