Statement on train derailment

21 February 2020

We are devastated by the tragedy that unfolded last night with the derailment of an XPT train near Wallan in Victoria.

We extend our deepest sympathy to the families, friends and co-workers of the victims during this difficult time.

These events have widespread impacts on all those involved, and we are heartbroken at the loss.

We are providing every support necessary with all those involved who are understandably going through a very difficult time.

The NSW Government is working closely with our colleagues in Victoria and the Federal Government to investigate how the accident occurred.

Minister for Regional Transport Paul Toole has travelled to Wallan.

We thank our first responders and rail operators who responded to the accident and provided essential support to those passengers and crew on board the train.
