Sydney's arts and culture stays up late
Sydneysiders and visitors will have more opportunity than ever to get their culture fix at iconic institutions across the CBD, after the NSW Government’s Culture Up Late initiative was extended until the end of June 2021.
The NSW Government has committed an additional $1.08 million to support the extension of Culture Up Late, which has already seen more than 30,000 visitors through the doors of participating institutions since the initiative launched in January.
Treasurer Dominic Perrottet said the initiative formed part of the NSW Government’s CBD revitalisation plan to bring people back to the CBD.
“Sydney is open for business, with cultural institutions, restaurants, cafes and bars all ready to welcome guests these school holidays and beyond,” Mr Perrottet said.
“We’re turbocharging our economic recovery by keeping businesses in business and people in jobs, and making it both safe and fun for people to come and enjoy the best of what our city has to offer.
“The extension of the Culture Up Late program along with Dine & Discover and our upcoming accommodation vouchers initiative means there’s no better time to enjoy a night out in the city.”
Minister for the Arts Don Harwin said the initiative has seen strong attendance at participating cultural institutions.
“After the year that was, we know people are eager to reclaim their evenings and immerse themselves in some of the best arts and culture the city has to offer,” Mr Harwin said.
“Keeping the doors open late at some of Sydney’s most vibrant cultural institutions has increased access by providing an alternate time for over 30,000 people who might not have ordinarily had a chance to visit.
“Our harbour city is a world-class cultural and entertainment hub, with the Culture Up Late initiative providing even more opportunities for visitors to explore blockbuster exhibitions and events in the evening and grab a bite to eat while they’re at it.”
The Art Gallery of NSW, Australian Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art, Powerhouse Museum, State Library of NSW, Sydney Living Museums, and Sydney Opera House are participating in Culture Up Late. Check participating institutions’ website for individual operating hours and specific programming.
Culture Up Late will now run until 30 June 2021 and is one of many initiatives designed to encourage people back to Sydney’s city centre as part of the NSW Government’s commitment to supporting businesses and jobs and boosting Sydney’s cultural life.
