Transforming Sydney: The Bays Precinct Sydney International Summit
NSW Premier Mike Baird and Minister for Planning Pru Goward today welcomed the world’s greatest minds in the field of urban regeneration to Sydney for a major international summit, which is examining the best ways to revitalise the area of Sydney Harbour known as The Bays Precinct.
Mr Baird today officially opened The Bays Precinct Sydney International Summit which is running for two days at Australian Technology Park in Sydney.
“The Bays Precinct presents one of the most exciting and ambitious urban renewal and city building opportunities in the world today and the outcomes of this summit will inform us as we move to the next stage,” Mr Baird said.
“We currently have an urban wasteland, four times the size of Barangaroo, right next to the world’s greatest harbour.
“A key objective of this urban renewal strategy is to return these areas to the public and create a harbour foreshore walk around the Bays Precinct.
“It is essential we properly plan for the renewal of this significant area, which is why we are hosting this summit to hear from global experts in the field of urban regeneration.”
Ms Goward said that as well as urban practitioners, academics and policymakers from across Australia and around the world, including large-scale projects in Europe, Asia and North America, community representatives are also participating in the two day summit.
“The participation of the community is critical to the success of The Bays Precinct Urban Transformation Program,” Ms Goward said.
“We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform what in many parts of this precinct could be classified as an urban wasteland.
“Here at this summit are some of the world’s best and brightest urban transformation experts, as well as local community representatives, all working to create a legacy we can be proud of.
“The Bays Precinct Urban Renewal Strategy will ensure the future of the entire area is developed through a holistic rather than a piecemeal approach.”
After the Summit, UrbanGrowth NSW will continue to consult with the community and other NSW stakeholders about an appropriate and achievable ambition for this Sydney Harbour transformation opportunity.
The Bays Precinct includes Rozelle Bay, Rozelle Rail Yards, White Bay Power Station, the Sydney Fish Market and surrounds.
