Construction underway on two new high schools for Sydney’s growing South West
Construction is underway on two new high schools in Sydney’s South West, as the Minns Labor Government delivers on its commitment to ensure Sydney’s high growth communities have access to quality public schools after a decade of neglect by the former Liberal-National Government.
Both Leppington’s new high school and a new permanent build high school for Gledswood Hills will be ready to welcome students on Day 1 Term 1 2027.
The schools will each include 51 modern classrooms catering for up to 1,000 students, plus a multipurpose hall, library, science and arts workshops, along with a playing field, sports courts, canteen and covered outdoor learning area.
To meet urgent demand, the Minns Labor Government fast-tracked the opening of Gledswood Hills High School for Year 7 students at the start of this year in temporary facilities next door to the newly opened Gregory Hills Public School.
Students in Year 7 and 8 will learn at the temporary Gledswood Hills High School facilities this year and next before moving to their new, permanent school in 2027.
The high schools are two of the new and upgraded schools the Minns Labor Government is delivering in Sydney’s South West growth corridor, an area where the former government failed to deliver essential services as the area’s population exploded.
These schools are being delivered as part of the Minns Labor Government’s plan to rebuild public education, with the 2025-26 Budget delivering a record $9 billion for school infrastructure, including $3.9 billion for new and upgraded schools in Western Sydney.
Since 2023 the Minns Labor Government has delivered more teachers and reduced teacher vacancies by 61 per cent, resulting in the number of cancelled classes recorded in NSW nearly halving.
Other major projects being delivered in Sydney’s South West growth corridor include:
- Austral Public School – upgrades including new classrooms
- Dalmeny Public School – upgrades including news classrooms and removal of demountables
- Eagle Vale High School sports stream – new sports facilities and school hall
- Edmondson Park - new high school
- Emerald Hills - new primary school and preschool
- Greenway Park Public School – upgrade to replace demountables with permanent classrooms and a new public preschool
- Leppington Public School – upgrade to include new permanent classrooms, a new hall, and covered outdoor learning area as well as a new public preschool

“I’m pleased that construction on the permanent Gledswood Hills High School is in full swing and our community is excited for the opportunities the new school will bring for our students.
“The new facilities, which I was proud to campaign for alongside local parents, will provide students with a supportive and innovative learning environment for years to come."

“The new Leppington High School will offer modern facilities and innovative learning spaces to inspire students and set them up for success.
