Marrinawi Cove upgrades to make summer splash in Barangaroo

Upgrade works will start imminently to improve and enlarge Barangaroo’s popular harbour swimming spot, Marrinawi Cove, which will be open for free in time for Sydney’s summer.

In response to community feedback, the Minns Labor Government listened to more than 500 visitors who called for better accessibility and more amenities, including showers, improved signage and increased space, among others.
 
The Minns Labor Government listened and acted, and work will begin in September to deliver:
  • A larger swimming area with a realigned shark net
  • A new outdoor shower
  • A new decking platform and non-slip stairs for safer water access
  • Integrated sandstone steps for improved water entry from the rocks
  • Additional towel space through relocated sandstone blocks
  • A depth marker to support swimmer safety.

Since opening in 2023, Marrinawi Cove has become a beloved destination for locals and tourists alike, offering a rare opportunity to swim in the heart of Sydney’s CBD and harbour without paying a cent.

The swimming enhancements are part of a broader initiative to improve accessibility around Sydney’s foreshore areas to boost usage and improve experience, and is fully funded by developer contributions.
 
Construction is expected to take three months with the Cove unsuitable for swimming during this period. It is expected to re-open in December 2025 in time for summer.

“We couldn’t have anticipated just how popular swimming at Marrinawi Cove would become.

“These upgrades are about responding to that popularity and making sure the space is safe, accessible, and enjoyable for everyone.
 
“The Minns Labor Government is committed to ensuring Barangaroo remains a vibrant, accessible foreshore that reconnects people with the harbour.”

Member for Sydney Alex Greenwich said:

“Marrinawi Cove, Sydney’s only ‘city beach’, is about to become even cooler and safer.

“I’m excited to join tourists, office workers, and Sydneysiders to jump in the water this summer and enjoy these community-led improvements.”

Infrastructure NSW Head of Projects Bruno Zinghini said:

"The upgrades were developed in partnership with landscape architects Oculus and shaped by two years of community feedback.

“We’ve worked closely with the community to design improvements that enhance the visitor experience while preserving the unique character of Marrinawi Cove.”
