Metro West contracts open next phase of major works
Sydney Metro West will progress with tracklaying, station-building, purchase of trains and construction of a 38-hectare stabling yard and operations centre at Clyde, with the signing of four key contracts worth a combined $11.5 billion that will take the project to the next stage.
This is part of the Minns Labor Government’s $30 billion per year delivery of critical infrastructure for the people of NSW. The four delivery contracts signed since 17 December, are:
- Linewide Package - Laying 60 kilometres of track, installation of rail systems, ventilation, fire systems, cross passages and the construction of a stabling and maintenance facility at Clyde. Contractor: John Holland. Value: $3.2 billion
- Stations Package West - Design and construction of five new underground metro stations at Westmead, North Strathfield, Burwood North, Five Dock and The Bays. Contractor: Gamuda. Value: $2.85 billion.
- Trains, Systems, Maintenance and Operations – A 22-year contract to provide the track, tunnel fit out, procure and commission a fleet of 16 new-generation metro trains and operate and maintain the Sydney Metro West network for a period of 15 years. Contractor: Metro Trains West Consortium, a joint venture led by MTR Corporation with CRRC Corporation Limited. Value: $3.96 billion
- Hunter Street Station and Precinct, Precinct Development Partner – A significant urban renewal project in the Sydney CBD, the consortium will deliver Sydney Metro West’s flagship city station at Hunter Street and two over-station commercial developments it will anchor. Development and delivery partners: Lendlease, Mirvac and Coombes Property Group. Value $1.5 billion.
Remaining contracts for Sydney Metro West stations at Parramatta, Sydney Olympic Park, and Pyrmont will be announced in 2026.
Separately, a shortlist of three consortia has been invited to tender for the Pyrmont Integrated Station Development contract, including:
- Gamuda Engineering, Gamuda and Urban Property Group Australasia
- John Holland and Third.i Property
- Watpac Construction and Plenary Origination
The chosen consortium will deliver the underground station and 31-storey building integrated development above it which will feature five levels of commercial and retail space, along with up to 160 new apartments.
Sydney Metro West travel times include:
- Westmead to Hunters Street in 22 minutes
- North Strathfield to Parramatta in 8 minutes
- Burwood North to Pyrmont in 10 minutes
- Five Dock to Sydney Olympic Park in 7 minutes
- The Bays to Hunter Street in five minutes
- Hunter Street to Five Dock in 8 minutes

“Awarding these contracts is an important moment for Sydney Metro West which takes the project from tunnelling to track-laying, station-building, systems and train operation.
“The stations in the Stations Package West will stand as a new gateway from western Sydney to the rest of the city. New interchange links at Westmead and North Strathfield will allow metro passengers to connect directly with Sydney Trains services, strengthening the wider transport network.
“New stations at The Bays, Five Dock and Burwood North will deliver metro access to areas currently without rail services, while the station at The Bays will act as a catalyst for unlocking a major new housing and employment precinct.
“Hunter Street Station will be the busiest station on the line, providing a 20-minute connection to Parramatta as well as pedestrian connections to Wynyard, and the M1 line metro platforms at Martin Place. These are exciting, city-shaping developments.”
