180 new social homes in Hurstville as NSW Government transforms former rail site
Plans to transform vacant government-owned land in Hurstville into around 180 new social homes can now be revealed, with a proposal to deliver much-needed housing in south Sydney.
The Minns Labor Government is undertaking the most significant housing and planning reform agenda in the state’s history, including the nation leading land audit and the historic $6.6 billion Building Homes for NSW program.
Under the proposal two new residential buildings would be developed on Forest Road turning an underutilised former Transport for NSW site used by Sydney Trains into modern social housing in a well-connected location.
Located between Hurstville and Penshurst train stations, the site is close to shops, health services, and other essential community facilities, making it an ideal location for new housing.
Identified through the NSW Government’s statewide land audit as surplus land suitable for housing, the proposal follows plans recently unveiled for around 340 homes at vacant sites in the Inner West.
The Hurstville proposal, which is being designed to complement the surrounding streetscape, could be up to 10 storeys and include parking, gardens and shared spaces for residents, along with modern and accessible homes.
New homes will help address significant demand for social housing in the local area, with more than 1,500 households currently on the Housing Register in the Georges River, including more than 400 priority applicants.
Homes NSW is now inviting the community to provide early feedback before a State Significant Development Application is lodged with the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure.
Feedback is open until 5pm Monday, 28 September 2026, with a community drop-in session being held on Thursday, 24 September from 4.30pm to 7pm at the Library Exhibition Area, Hurstville Library, corner of Dora Street and Queens Road.
The community will have another opportunity to have their say when the State Significant Development application is formally exhibited.
