Red-hot tech: Minister opens second Daikin factory in Australia
The Minister for Industry and Trade Anoulack Chanthivong has today opened Daikin Australia’s second advanced manufacturing facility in southwest Sydney, welcoming their contribution to Western Sydney’s industry growth and skilled employment opportunities.
The Minister joined Daikin Australia’s Managing Director Hidekai Furihata and His Excellency Consul-General of Japan in Sydney Osamu Yamanaka, to lead to the ribbon-cutting ceremony at Chipping Norton this morning.
This event marks the culmination of the NSW Government’s $2.6 million investment to support Daikin’s manufacturing and research & development (R&D) expansion. This investment is expected to grow Daikin’s net production value by around $50 million in NSW, as well as create a range of manufacturing jobs as Daikin continues producing vital technology for air conditioning, heating, cooling and other temperature regulation.
This expansion also delivers on the NSW Industry Policy’s objective of increasing local manufacturing, as well as fostering a dynamic economy driven by innovation, productivity and robust supply chains.
Neighbouring Daikin’s first Australian office also in Chipping Norton, this new site strengthens NSW sovereign capability and represents an important step forward in cementing Western Sydney as a globally competitive location for advanced manufacturing.
The new facility expands Daikin’s production capacity, supports ongoing R&D activities, and introduces improved manufacturing processes to increase efficiency and product output.
New South Wales is already home to almost one third of Australia’s manufacturing activity. Situated on 7,500 square meters of Daikin’s head office site, this factory represents a cumulative $28.6 million boost to its growth in this sector.
As a world-leading manufacturer of air conditioning and climate control solutions, Daikin’s sustained investment in Australia represents an important opportunity to strengthen connections between Japan and NSW, drive growth, and diversify export products and markets in line with the NSW Trade and Investment Strategy 2035.
Minister for Industry and Trade Anoulack Chanthivong said:
“The Minns Labor Government welcomes the opening of Daikin’s second factory in Australia.
“This is an exciting moment for southwest Sydney to show off its credentials as hub for global investment in advanced manufacturing.
“NSW is open for business, and partnerships like this take the Government’s efforts to build a more innovative, dynamic and sustainable economy to the next level.
“These opportunities for skills development, sovereign capabilities and industry growth are key examples of the NSW Industry Policy, NSW Innovation Blueprint and NSW Trade and Investment Strategy in action.”
Daikin Australia Managing Director Hideaki Furihata said:
“Today’s opening is a proud milestone for Daikin Australia and to our many local partners whose support helped bring this manufacturing factory to life and expand our range of Australian Made products.
“Western Sydney is fast becoming a hub for innovation, and we’re excited to deepen our roots here.
“This site brings together our engineering expertise, local know‑how and customer focus. It will help us refine our manufacturing processes, accelerate product development and ensure we deliver air‑conditioning solutions that perform in Australia’s diverse conditions efficiently, safely and consistently.”
His Excellency, Consul-General of Japan in Sydney Osamu Yamanaka said:
“I would like to express my deep respect for Daikin’s commitment to quality, reliability and continuous improvement.
“I am pleased to see Japanese industry working alongside local partners to deliver technology that serves households and business across Australia.
“We see great potential in the collaboration between Japanese companies, NSW industry and research communities, as demonstrated by the strong turnout at the Japanese Industry Event held at the Bradfield City Centre a few weeks ago.”
