Murray Art Museum Albury hosts the 2017 Archibald Prize exhibition this summer. Prestigious and controversial, the Archibald Prize is Australia’s foremost portraiture prize. It's a who’s who of Australian culture, from politicians to media figures, sporting heroes to artists. Held by the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Archibald Prize is awarded to the best painting of a notable Australian. The Prize has been held annually since 1921, and now in its 96th year is worth AUD100,000 to the winning artist. As an open competition, the Prize attracts entries from across Australia. The final selection is made by the Art Gallery of New South Wales Board of Trustees. While visiting the 2017 Archibald Prize you are invited to cast your vote in the People's Choice Award, and children can enter a portrait in the Young Archie competition. Exhibition entry is free for 18 years and under. The 2017 Archibald Prize exhibition is a touring exhibition of the Art Gallery of New South Wales and is supported by presenting partner ANZ.
