Renaissance engineer Professor Melissa Knothe Tate turns art and science on their heads. exploring the intersection of cutting edge biomedical science and woven textiles in this transdisciplinary exhibition. She will present her multifunctional textiles, including those that replicate the natural weave of the tissue around human bones, woven with a state-of-the-art computer-controlled jacquard weaving loom. This research into a future of smart materials inspired by nature is complemented by a long-term goal – to weave biological tissues that can be used in the body to replace and repair failing joints.
