Heidi Axelsen is well known for her work with partner Hugo Moline, where they make large-scale, site-specific artworks. With Liminal, Axelsen is exhibiting a lesser seen side of her practice – a quiet, beautiful, delicate, reflective series of sculpture. 'Liminal' refers to the condition of a threshold space, the space between consciousness and unconsciousness. You are neither here or there but swimming in a vast transitional space, a state of suspension. In this exhibition, the artist uses materials and textures to express thoughts and feelings about states of transition. Concrete, plaster, marble, lead, felt, steel, copper have been moulded, carved, folded, cast, sewn and assembled to find a material presence to immaterial and ephemeral experiences.
