The Harp of Erin Hotel, Gulgong operated from 1871-1875. It was owned by Irishman Pat Gallon. Pat was well renown for the love of the tipple and locals would be regularly awoken to the sound of Pat 'hollering, yelling and fighting his own shadow' on his way home from sampling the liquor from his competitors establishments. In the 1800's there was strict regulations on what you could and could not do in a licensed premises. Pat once found himself in court for having a dance in his hotel without official approval and warned that a repeat offence would incur a £10 fine. It was recommended that the Harp of Erin Hotel be 'avoided by those who had no taste for rowdyism'. Thankfully those actions are no longer an offence, so if anyone is looking for some singing and dancing you can make your way to Gulgong to celebrate the folk traditions of the Emerald Isle. There will be live Irish music at the Prince of Wales Hotel, Gulgong all day from 12pm til midnight. So order yourself an Irish stew, grab yourself a Guinness, pull up a pew beside the fire and enjoy the festivities.
